Sunday Question: Who wants free cards?

I was at Target the other day and saw this lonely blaster on the shelf and it was very reasonably priced and I thought, "hmm.... I should buy that and give it away in a contest." Well, I thought it was a splendid idea.

I came up with the contest question while out with my brother and his friend playing baseball the other day. My glove is over 20 years old (gasp), and I have one that I bought in college about 8 years ago that I just never was able to break in, and is an outfielders glove (read: easier to catch with) which is larger than my glove I used to play third base. We had a laugh over who the stamped signature in my glove is since this player is long since retired. Then it hit me, there is the question.

**In light of the season kicking off tonight, and baseball being in full swing the contest question is:

What player's signature stamp is in the palm of my first baseball glove?

Hint: He was a pitcher.

The prize will be a 2006 Fleer Ultra blaster.

Also, feel free to share if your first glove had a signature in it, and who it was if you would like.

The contest will run from today until Wednesday to give everyone a chance to participate in case some people are away this weekend for the holiday. If no one guesses correctly, I will offer another hint.

  1. Nolan Ryan.

I never had players names on my gloves, it was just something I didn't like. However, I do have promo gloves from the Syracuse Chiefs, and some have signatures.

Alex Rodriguez is on the last facsimile item I purchased, a wooden Louisville Slugger.

  2. My first glove was a hand-me-down from my sister. Fernando Valenzuela.

    Now, mine just says Mizuno.

  4. I'm not entering the contest -- too many cards floating around here as it is.

My first glove was a Jose Canseco model.

  6. My first player model glove was a Jose Canseco, although I always wanted a Mark McGwire first baseman's glove.

  7. Greg Maddux, because he was on one of my gloves.

  8. Tom Glavine?

My first glove was a black Regent infielders mitt. Darryl Strawberry.

  9. By the way, I'm totally going to bid on my old mitt.. I lost mine during my last year of little league.

  12. Orel Hershiser is my guess. My first glove was Dave Winfield.

  13. Ron Guidry.

My first glove had a Tom Seaver signature.

  14. David Cone

My first glove was a Ken Griffey Jr. and I still have it.

  16. I'll go with Roger Clemens

  17. Hmm. My guess is Dennis Eckersley.

My first glove was Ken Griffey, Jr., and my first bat was a Darryl Strawberry.

  18. You: Doug Drabek

Me: Bobby (Not Barry, but his dad) Bonds)

  19. I'll guess Jose Rijo.

My first glove was Mike Schmidt.

  20. I'm going to have to say Nolan Ryan...

  21. I'm going to go with Mike Flanagan because he was on my first glove.

  22. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say Bob Welch.

My first glove, well, I don't remember who's name was in it (most likely Jeter, since I was a SS), but it is long gone now.

Kind of sad to think about it now.

  23. Since everyone posted before me what I was going to say(Ryan), they would win. So I'll go out on a limb and say Gossage.

  24. Some of these answers are cracking me up, I don't know why but they are.

  25. I will go with Mark Langston.

  26. How about Dave Stewart?

The real question is, what happened in the Target warehouse? My Target has the same 4-year old blasters for the same price.

  27. I am going to guess Roger Clemens. His name was everywhere 20 years ago..

And my first glove? Cal Ripken, Jr.

    ReplyDelete
  28. TOM GLAVINE is my guess

My first glove had Glavine's sig stamped on it so I figured it was a worthy guess. However, that glove was about 6 inches long. The first glove that I picked out for myself was none other than Derek Jeter. Wouldn't have it any other way

  29. Don Larsen, how old do you think I am? LOL

    ReplyDelete
  30. My guess would be Dave Righetti

At least he was my first glove!

    ReplyDelete
  31. LOL, ok that's more like it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. roger clemens is my guess.

my first glove had Mike Schmidt's auto in the palm.

    ReplyDelete
  33. If we're allowed a second guess, then I'm going to say Steve Avery.

If not, then just send me that Fleer Ultra Blaster anyway.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I didn't see Steve Carlton so I'll go with him.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Mark Davis?

I can't remember who was on my first glove. But Eddie Murry was on my first bat.

    ReplyDelete
  36. I want to say Rob Dibble for some reason but I will go with Mike Mussina.

    ReplyDelete
  37. My guess is Tom Seaver.

My first glove was a George Brett mocel.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I had a Ripkin glove when I was little.

    ReplyDelete
  39. Don't tell me you had a Goose Gossage glove?

    ReplyDelete
  40. Whoops, someone already picked Gossage. I can't think of any more mid-80s Yankees pitchers that would be good enough for a glove signature. Hoping you were a Mets fan back in the day, I'll go with Ron Darling.

  41. OK, let's see. Twenty years ago (at least) puts the glove smack dab in the middle of the Junk Wax Era; about 1990.

    I'm guessing Dwight Gooden.

My guess out of left field is LaMarr Hoyt. (I don't know, maybe it was a budget glove...)

  42. Kazuo Uzuki ? No? OK, then David Cone
