Happy 4th of July to all! This weeks Sunday question is something I have been toying with for a few weeks, and ran by Sooz. We figured it is best left up to the majority. What I was thinking about doing is organizing a case break of an upcoming product with one exception- Stephen Strasburg.
I hear the gasps. Relax, I don't want the card(s). What I want to do is get people to purchase a team, or teams like most other breaks but any Strasburg's that are pulled will be auctioned on eBay and the money from that card will be split amongst the people who participated. I figure this way we can all get a little (or alot) of money back on the cost of the break. Obviously I think this is a great idea, but I want to hear feedback from people who would participate.
Product possibilities: 2010 Bowman Chrome, 2010 Topps T-206, 2010 Topps Chrome, 2010 Topps Tribute ($$$)
Personally, I like T-206 and the set looks pretty good this year. Also, you get more for the money out of it.
More than likely the following teams will be taken by Sooz and myself: Yankees, Cardinals, A's, and Blue Jays (unless someone is willing to cut me in to their Jays so I can get the Lind cards).
So the question is really, what do you think of the Strasburg idea on a case break of one of those products? Let me know, and I will post a follow up blog if people are interested.
I like the idea of the Strasburg thing. I would love to get in on this, if the price isn't too high.
ReplyDeleteI like the idea, but what if we did it so that people got as much of a complete base set as possible and then the hits would be divided up basis what teams people pick? for all I know that's already how you plan to do it but it's just a thought because 10 base cards of the same guy don't sound all that appealing to me.
ReplyDeleteI would'nt mind getting in on this, depending on which product (I like T-206) and the price. Also I'm a Lind collector but wouldnt mind splitting the Jays and any of the Lind dupes.
ReplyDeleteThe only way this would be appealing is if you removed the Washington Nationals from the break altogether.
ReplyDeleteI am currently trying to fill a case break for A&G and the Strasburg question came up there. Seeing as he is a SP auto and a rip-card insert find I donèt see it as much of a problem, thankfully.
However, if I was the person who claimed the Nats and had a Strasburg taken away just because of they hype non-collectors are creating I would not be happy.
Should the person who claims the Cardinals forfeit a box-topper Pujols nameplate 1/1 just because they can be flipped for a nice tidy sum?
It is an interesting debate and one I am thankful I do not really have to worry about.

ReplyDeleteI wonder about the Strasburg move too. Why would anyone pick the Nationals if you've removed their best player? Maybe if you did a base card break, and auctioned all the hits.
Or, just left Strasburg in the mix from the start.
We'd probably be interested in this sort of thing. But I agree that the Nationals should be out of it all together. Let us know if it comes together!
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about this exact same thing and would definitely be interested. I think logistically it's tough though: you either need to have a random break and say beforehand that there is no strasburg, or do a team break where the case is divided by 29 instead of 30 or, do it as a "for profit only" break, where we, as a group, buy a case with the intention of flipping it, and maybe each person has an "option" on claiming a base card set of their team of choice or something like that.
ReplyDeleteEither way, I'd be interested in doing this, and like the idea of Topps 206, but think that Bowman Chrome, if available for the right price, would be the one to do it for.
OK, I see what you guys are saying about the exclusion of the Nationals completely.
ReplyDeleteI also like the idea of each person getting a base set (or as much of an equal one as possible), and then getting all the inserts/parallels/gu/auto of the team they bought. I know I will not want 9 Yadier Molina cards.
So how does a 29 team split, with the sale of the Strasburg cards for a return on the break sound?
I saw that Blowout had 2010 Bowman Chrome cases for $1050 (hobby not jumbo). The T-206 was about $800. Obviously I will price around and see where we can get the best deal and go from there.
P.S. Tunguska, I see what you are saying about the box toppers and such but the reality is as a Pujols collector if I paid for that team, it's solely because I want to keep the card for myself and not flip it. I don't know many people who can afford to be Strasburg collectors, at least right now when people are being silly adn spending $16k on a non-auto card.
You're talking a case break for about $50 each (assuming all teams are accounted for). I'm in for Indians. What you do with Nats and Strasburg is up to you. Frankly, I think if the person who picks Nats know ahead of time that Stras is out, then it is they can't complain about it. I think Stras should be the only pull-out though. All other inserts etc go to the team requester. That's the nature of group breaks - not everyone "wins," but nearly everyone walks away happy. :-)

ReplyDeleteWe are going to try for a 30 team break, with the person choosing the Nationals not getting Strasburg would pay less for the team. I will put the teams into price tiers based on the average number of cards from that team in most sets. Does that sound good?
Also, do you guys like the idea of everyone getting one base card each and just the inserts etc from their paid team or you just want your team? Just curious what people think of that particular aspect.
I like the idea of a break, yes. Depends on the product/price though, and how things are handled.

I suppose I am confused. If each person gets one base card, what happens to the rest of the base cards? Are they put in a pot and doled out to everyone randomly or are you keeping them to try and build the set? (Again, must be the 'special' sweet tea I had...)
