2010-2011 Donruss Basketball Break (Panini)

Disclaimer: I loved Donruss. I loved them so much that I was angry when they lost their license for baseball cards, more angry than any grumpy comment or blog ever posted about Upper Deck losing theirs. This post may contain drool.

Down to business. The good folks over at Panini sent over another box of product for my entertainment and review, 2010-2011 Donruss Basketball. All teams are available if you would like any of them (except the Lakers and Gallinari).

I had alot of fun opening this box, it immediately gave me a somewhat vintage Donruss type feel as soon as I opened the first pack. The fronts of the cards are glossy, while the back are not. The backs of the cards are pretty cool, and very retro. I took scans of the front and back of the base cards so you can see what I am talking about.

This set also resurrected the "Rated Rookie" cards of childhood. There was roughly one of these per pack in the box, with the obvious favorite here being John Wall. Here is a look at the Rated Rookies that were in the box.

For the Rated Rookies, I actually prefer the action shot on the black or white background as opposed to an in game shot. I like the idea because it makes these cards different than just the regular base veteran cards.

Next, I would like to show the checklist cards. Most sets I throw the checklists in the garbage and don't care for them. This set features one checklist per team, some with a team photo and others with random teammates on them. These also appeared roughly one per pack.

So now we get to the inserts and parallels, which are pretty awesome... if you loved Donruss. There are die cut base parallels which are not serial numbered.

Here is another one of the keystone insert cards from Donruss, Production Line. These cards are serial numbered /999. Oddly enough, the die cut Production Line are not serial numbered. I would have thought it would have made sense to do it the other way around.

Boo Celtics!! This is another die cut insert, Magicians, Rondo. This is also just a regular insert with no serial numbering.
Craftsmen

This was another one of my favorite inserts from the baseball sets, though I think the old baseball ones from 2003-2004 were nicer than this design. I think Amar'e Stoudemire would have looked better on the baseball design.

Another card of Amar'e Stoudemire, but this time with Dwight Howard, on a new insert (well new to me), Duos.

Gamers insert of Kobe Bryant, which is /299. Kind of a cool generic insert, however instead of green, go with purple next time.

Jersey Kings insert, Luis Scola.

The next three cards are the ol' Press Proof cards, which are printed on a prism type board, but have the same weight and thickness as a regular card. They are serial numbered /100, and are very cool. I would love a Robbie Cano one like these.

Dwayne Wade

Ben Gordon

Kevin McHale GU /299

Derrick Rose /299

Omri+Casspi auto /199
I'm not really a fan of this auto card at all. It's on a sticker (lame), and I almost passed right by it in the pack because other than a spot of lightness, it has no distinguishable features making id "different". It may sound overly critical, but I think I am just bored with being stuck buying or collecting the same exact card in 30 different (but not really) versions.

Overall, I think this set did a tremendous job capturing the Donruss feeling and putting a set together that brought back memories of those sets.

Do you guys agree that Panini did a good job with bringing back Donruss in this set?

  1. I bought a few packs and honestly, was not impressed. That weird yellow/brown/green tint really turned me off of the product. The Rated Rookies are nice, but other than that, meh.

  2. I would love to claim the Bulls, if you are giving them away.

  3. What's the price? I'll take the 76ers, depending on the price.

  4. Kinda like 84 Donruss baseball. I would like the Blazers if they are available. Thanks

  5. I really do like the look of them, and will probably pick up a few packs to check them out. I love throwback designed cards. Depending on price I'd love the Celtics if they're available

  6. I'd be interested in buying any of the Charlotte Bobcats cards. Let me know what you want for 'em please.

  7. To get the teams you guys want, just send me the shipping cost through PayPal to my personal paypal addy @ SedaZ28 AT aol DOT com.

$3.00 ought to do the trick. I need to pick up some team bags after the snow storm and then I can mail them out.

  8. I love the set and will probably pick up a base set on eBay, but I think Panini shot an airball it when it comes to the pack out. $60 - $70 for a sticker auto and two jersey cards that look like every other jersey card that Panini has ever done is not a good value no matter how many times Tracy Hacker wants to try and convince people that it is on the Panini blog. Didn't Classics sell for around $80-$90 with four on-card autos and a jersey card? That makes this stuff look like an absolute rip-off.

  9. Hey MarieBay,

I'm from the UK, how much would shipping cost?

    Mark

  10. Mark, I'm guessing around $5.00. I haven't shipped that way in a few years, but I do remember it being a little more than air mail to Canada... if that makes any sense. lol

  11. I hear the BC Sports by you has tons of team bags for sale. LOL

As a low-end collector, I am very excited to see Donruss hoops (and hockey) and especially for the "Rated Rookies". And thanks for posting with pics. It's kinda hard to find hoops breaks with pics.

I'd love to get the Sixers if they're still available. Just LMK please...

  12. I agree, I think Panini did a good job bringing back the feel from the old basketball sets. I like the Jersey Kings too. Some of die-cuts are very odd too like the corner die-cut on the Rondo Magicians insert. I saw some on a box break that looked like a kid went crazy with a pair of scissors.

  13. MarieBay, lol that does make sense. If I sent you $5 would that be ok, or would you like to find out how much it will be?

  14. I haven't seen these in person yet, but it looks to be a decent set. I guess this kinda takes the place of the Panini flagship set from last year, since it has a bigger checklist of players from each team. Any chance of getting the Mavs thrown in with our trade in progress?

  15. Excellent, payment sent for the Bulls, thanks again!

  17. Purchased 3 blaster boxes today and received no autos or memorabilia cards. (Its stated one per box.) Two of the three boxes only had 7 packs instead of the 8 advertised. I'm highly disappointed with Panini I have had several issues with them.

  18. Hello,

Enjoy your blog and noted the review of the Donruss hoops set. I am working on the base set and have the following needs. If you are still willing to part with some of the cards you reviewed and still have any that are on the list, let me know what we can do to make a trade, purchase, etc. I have a little pile of Production Line inserts and two jersey relics that I can offer in return. Thanks! - Jeff
