Sunday Question

This week we found out that Panini is now licensed to produce MLB player cards and is planning to do a few releases. This is a great thing if you ask me because we need some variety in our collections and a choice of what to buy is always nice.

I'm curious as to who else is excited about this, and will you guys be buying Panini baseball cards when they are released?

I guarantee that I will be purchasing some and I am hoping they do something good with the license and make some nice high end inserts and auto cards.

Here are some example of Panini products:

Elite Extra Edition baseball cards
Panini Contenders (Mostly hockey cards in this group)
Logoman cards
Some of its rookie cards with patches, jerseys and autograph cards

  1. I will be buying for sure! I can't wait to see how Panini pulls off a player set without going the UD route. Hopefully, the MLB will see that Topps exclusive contract was a mistake and never sign another deal like that again (once this one expires).

  2. I'm looking forward to what comes out. I like competition.

That doesn't mean I am going to buy automatically. I am going to wait to buy based on what I see.

  3. Very excited. I hope it paves the way for a full license. I was disappointed in the amount of Pete Rose and Joe Jackson memorabilia cards they flooded the market with and hope they don't make the same mistake.

  4. I just can't wait for that company that's doing high school sports cards to finally release something *cough cough* :P

  5. No interest here. The lack of logos is probably a deal-breaker.

Will competition spur innovation that leads to better products, or is it going to lead to shoddier sets as both companies try to keep costs low to remain profitable with collectors having more products to split their dollars between?

  7. I think it's good for the hobby to have some competition for Topps. Personally, I wish Upper Deck would get their license back.

I probably won't buy any boxes of Panini, but I'll pick up singles of stuff I'm interested in.

  8. Panini will have to step up their graphic design a LOT to make up for the the lack of team licenses. Their basketball sets are usually really bland and all about the hits, so if they don't have anything visually going for them I'm going to skip everything.

  9. Competition is always good.I'm always looking for Tribe cards, logos or not.Obviously the sucess of their products will depend on availability and appearance.Hopefully it won't be too crazy with parallels,1/1's etc.

  10. I too am looking forward to competition if they can make cards that are worth collecting: http://thiscardiscool.blogspot.com/2011/09/panini-swings-bat-what-id-like-to-see.html

  11. I am just glad to see some movement. It's not the same ad a full MLB license but it's something.

I am a fan of the design in the Hamilton preview image that Panini has on their site.

  12. Meh,

"No interest here. The lack of logos is probably a deal-breaker."

Fellow Paul, you took the words right out of my mouth.

  13. Will wait and see. Always decide based on design. Hopefully this leads to a real license. And pray they stay away from copying their repetitive foilboard obsessed football designs. Would like to see a legend/veteran centric set for once instead of a rookie-stuffed set like most of what's out now.

  14. I like competition but their design... meh. I did some mock ups showing what I think they could do to at least improve the design on the preview card they put out there.
