Even without playing, Tim Tebow gives collectors a reason to chase

The Denver Broncos quarterback controversy is giving collectors reason to swoop up cards of Tim Tebow.

Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy winner during his colllege career with the University of Florida Gators, is currently listed as the team's third-string quarterback, behind Kyle Orton and Brady Quinn.

Orton has struggled so far this season, throwing an interception and losing a fumble in a week one Monday Night loss to rival Oakland. Orton led Denver to a 24-22 win over Cincinnati Sunday, throwing two touchdowns. 

But the calls for a new QB persist.

Quinn, a star during his Notre Dame days, has started 12 NFL games, most recently for the Cleveland Browns in 2009.

Tebow started three games last year, throwing five touchdowns and three interceptions.

In the baseball card collector's past, many people haven't been happy with what Topps has put out when it comes to high-end products.

Triple Threads can be a little gimmicky, especially with some of the wording they put on the card (example).

Some of the autograph cards from Marquee are nice, but the jumbo relics (forever known as rags) have a lot left to be desired.

However, when it comes to football, Topps has a high-end hit on its hands with Five Star. It was popular last year with fans as the autographs were on-card. Additionally, Five Star was well-designed.

Topps just released some preview pics of the next installment on its Facebook page.

2010 Topps Chrome Football

While in Target today I noticed an open shipment box that was waiting to be put on the shelves so I rummaged through it. I saw gravity boxes of 2010 Topps Chrome Football, as well as rack packs, and blasters. I debated dabbling with a blaster but then remembered I really don't care about football cards, and other than Tim Tebow I wasn't sure what I could flip out of the set.

It didn't dawn on me until just now to think to have checked the blaster prices on those to see if they would ring up $17.99 like the 2010 Topps Chrome Baseball blasters have been.

Tim Tebow Superfractor 1/1 pulled - it's purrty

Tim Tebow's 2010 Topps Finest Superfractor auto/patch 1/1 was pulled and is on eBay.

I think is really nice. I love the patch.

I also wonder why football has better cards than baseball.

2010 Upper Deck Sweet Spot (NCAA Edition) is live

Over the years, Sweet Spot has been one of my favorite baseball products. This year, no baseball, but Upper Deck is showing off its CLC license with an NCAA Sweet Spot product.

This product features many football stars of the past and present in their college uniforms.

And, literally, the very first of these cards are trickling onto eBay.

Catching up on hobby news

With Marie and I going on our adventures last week, I didn't get a chance to write up the latest hobby news, which by this point is old news to many of you.

I like putting it on the blog anyway because it's a way for me to keep record of what's happening and I could refer to it at a later date.

Item #1 (from Beckett)
Panini and the NFL and NFLPA have agreed to a multi-year trading cards deal

With the announcement (that many knew was coming), Panini released 2010 Prestige, which includes Tim Tebow's first rookie cards and autos. Love the player or hate the player, his auto from this set have sold for around $150 with the short-printed variation going in the $25-$40 range.

Topps released preview images of 2010 Triple threads

I intend to have a whole post dedicated to Topps Triple Threads, but just wanted to show a few of the preview images released of the set. I like the first card, but the player should certainly have his name on it. I'm not sold on the second card, but it would be nice if they were on-card autos.

Collectors always love that. This product is set to be released at the end of August at around $180/box.

Finest Rookie Redemption #3 revealed

Cubs rookie Starlin Castro is the third redemption. Castro had a great debut (which we blogged about). He had a homer a six RBIs, but since then he has not had any more of either. However, he has gotten on base and is hitting .323 (10-for-31).
