ARod's 500th home run ball up for auction

With the recent admission of steroid guilt by Mark McGwire and the baseball world not seemingly caring, the person who caught ARod's 500th home run thought it was a good time throw it up for auction.

Here's a story that ran on ESPN tonight.

LAGUNA NIGEL, Calif. -- The ball Alex Rodriguez hit for his 500th home run will be auctioned off online.

SCP Auctions said bidding will begin Jan. 20 for the ball recovered by a college student at the old Yankee Stadium when A-Rod hit No. 500 on Aug. 4, 2007.

SCP also sold the balls Barry Bonds hit for his 755 and 756th home runs.

The question is what does this ball sell for? Any ballpark figures?

  1. Since Todd McFarlane put up $3 million for Big Mac's 70th HR ball and Marc Ecko put up $750k for Bond's 756th* HR ball it seems like the world is getting less interested in the steroid era homerun balls. I wouldn't be surprised to see it come in under $200-250k, especially considering that while it is a milestone, it is not a "record" ball and A-Rod is still playing plus #600 will probably be hit before Mid-May.

  2. I was at the game. As far away from where it landed as possible (in the RF Upper Deck, high enough to not be able to see the right fielder.)

    The place was unbelievable.
