The East Coast National has something for every type of collector

It's always funny to me the August White Plains card shows is dubbed the East Coast National. The word national kind of throws it off when it's just on the East Coast.

I always enjoy this show though -- along with the January one -- because it's one of the biggest ones on the calendar in the NY area. But it's difficult to get into it especially if you just came back from the actual National.

The difference for me was that I worked the National Sports Collections Convention and didn't have as much time as I would have liked to walk around. Thankfully, Marie did some scouting and found some tables with Derek Jeter cards for sale. I hopped over when I got a break.

Since coming back from the NSCC, I have a renewed sense of updating my Jeter Collection. I really don't know what I have anymore. When people ask how many I have, I say over 3,000 different because it's true, but I have no clue of the exact number.

I don't know what I need anymore and I certainly don't even know what I have.

So before heading out to the East Coast "National," I did my best in logging the cards I have. This way, to limit the amount of double I would buy.

While I have only gotten through roughly half -- I've sorted about 1,500 cards, so far -- I'm still no where near where I need to be. But it was still so helpful in having that list. Because one thing I also realized while logging the cards I have is that I'm missing so many inexpensive cards because I assumed I had them.

I managed to get 30 Jeter cards while at the White Plains Show. I know that at least one is double though because I couldn't find it in my shet while I was looking. The moment I got home -- boom! -- there it was.

Isn't that always the case.

As always, the show is filled with vintage cards. Beckett, PSA and SGC were all there. As well as auction houses looking for items.

It's a good show to go to every six months or so because the dealers don't rotate much. Generally, it's the same people every time and with a White Plains shows every 2-3 months, you're looking at the same cards over and over.

And it's not cheap to get in. The biggest sticking point is the convention parking lot is $15 (there are other places to park nearby), and $10 just to get inside. I know the convention center and the promoter need to make money, the promoter should be getting the biggest chunk out of the autograph tickets.

You're already down $25 before you've bought anything!

I don't have time to search for street parking because I have a 3-year-old in tow. We started bringing him to card shows in hopes he will enjoy cards too.

He does like Pokemon though. So he was catching Pokemon with his new ball while Mommy was looking through a box of Jeter cards. It's a good thing he's cute because the dealers were having fun with him and didn't mind the ball rolling into their area too much.

By the way, how awesome is this packaging? (It wasn't dented when we bought it)

All in all, it's a solid show. I wish the amenities were a bit cheaper and there were slightly more modern cards. But it's a good mix with a little something for everyone.

Even the Jeter collector.

Card Show Loot (MOJO!)

So I caved and went to the show because, well because why the hell not? Sure, I had other things that I could have done today that would have cost me nothing but...... this was way funner.

What I would like to note for the people that said they may go on Sunday is you really shouldn't bother. Over the last year or two that show has gotten significantly smaller, and this show was even worse than usual. If you don't want old newspapers or old junk, there really wasn't much. The few usual suspects that I deal with were there, along with the one table who overvalues everything on earth (i.e. $3 for a Jeter ToppsTown from 2011). I also noticed there were a few people who are there at every show were missing or half the size.

There wasn't much newer wax around, or maybe that's because there hasn't been much released. There were not many 2011 Heritage singles, chromes or refractors. One guy tried telling me a Phil Hughes 2011 Heritage refractor was $15. I laughed in his face. There was also a Jeter 2011 206 refractor for $15... again, no.

I picked these up from the one guy that always has something I want to buy. He is also the first person I stop at each time I go to this show. Here is what he had for me...

2011 Topps Opening Day Stadium Lights Robinson Cano

2011 Topps Opening Day Stars Albert Pujols

Then I walked around and wasn't really seeing anything and was getting kind of bummed out that I had spent more on gas, tolls, and admission than I found in cards. After about a half hour of milling around I found something that has been on my radar for a while.

2003 Topps 1st Year Robinson Cano

Same dude also had these in a cheap box of singles. Idds are I have one or both of these since I can never go to a show without buying something I already own free and clear. This is why my plan was to stick to 2010 and 2011 cards only and autographs.

2003 Upper Deck Victory Albert Pujols

2003 Baseball Heroes Albert Pujols/Stan Musial /499

Sigh. Well at this point I had spent more than the $7.00 it cost to get in, but was still kind of bummed. Until I found the holy grail of cards. I was asking around for Cano autos and a couple of guys said they were gone already (mind you they opened at 2pm, I walked in around 2:10). Then some random dude overheard me and was like oh, go to that guy he has a ton of Cano autos. OK, I'm in.

This is the part where the clouds parted, the sun began to shine and the birds chirped. Sweet glorious stacks of Cano autographs. Most of which I already had, but then.... there they were. Three of the cards I wanted. One to finish the rainbow, one that I have been chasing around for years, and the other one I have been holding off on until I could get it for a fair price. Here they are in that order.

2010 Bowman Platinum Robinson Cano /199

I have had a thing for this card since I saw it. I love this card so much. I don't know how it took me so long to get one, or why I didn't buy it back when it was less than $10 like everything else of Cano way back when. But now it's mine! All mine! Muahahahahaha...

2006 Turkey Red Robinson Cano

2004 Bowman Sterling Robinson Cano

While it wasn't much in terms of quantity, this was the most quality cards I have picked up at this show in years. I normally end up with a bunch of dollar cards and maybe if I'm lucky, one autograph. I have been excited about the loot since I left the show, I feel like I accomplished something by filling some gaps in my collection. There are only two other autographs of Cano that I want in my earlier cards of him.

2003 Bowman Heritage RC AU

2005 Bowman Signs of the Future

Did anyone else make it to the show Friday? If you go today or Sunday, let me know if you felt the same way about the amount of vendors. Oh, and tell me what you got of course.

Card Show in town

This weekend the local card show at the Westchester County Center is back in town. I have missed the last 3 or 4 shows when it has gone on and I am debating on going tomorrow.

I like this show because I know most of the vendors, and one them are quick to point out their Pujols or Cano cards when I am approaching their table. I still haven't put away the cards I got the last time I went to the show in September... I know, terrible.

The show opens tomorrow at 2pm and if I go, I will be there at 2pm before all the Yankees get picked through. Last time I went I got a Cano t-206 auto and a few cheap singles. This time (if I go) I will probably just see if I can find a few Heritage singles so I am not tempted to open another single pack of that.

Anyone in the area planning on making a trip to the show? I will post the info on the show in case someone is wondering who is signing this weekend.

White Plains card show

I noticed the other day online somewhere that the show opened at 2pm for some reason, so I did some research and confirmed that rumor. I figured if I went that early, there wouldn't be many people and I could make it back over the bridge before rush hour, or end up sitting in the diner playing with cards 'til after the traffic.

I arrived at the show around 1:40pm, walked over to the center maybe ten minutes early so I didn't have to stand outside however the doors were already open because they were letting people stand inside this time. There were maybe 10 people on line when I first walked in, and not one of them was a woman. It was me and old men. Shorty thereafter the line grew to about 50 or more, with one other woman on the whole line, but she was with her son. I was with myself.

I walked around for maybe 20 seconds before one of my long time favorites on eBay stopped me and said what's up, etc. (tntnorthnj on eBay) I talked to him for a bit then moved onto to another table where I was asked why I wasn't at the last show by that dealer. He then asked me what Pujols I needed from recent sets and stuff like that. I ended up buying 3 cards from him, of which I got to pick my own price which was fun for me. I picked up a 2007 Heritage Chrome Robbie Cano, 2009 Unique Red Francisco Cervelli, and a 2009 TTS Seasoned Veterans Albert Pujols (which I learned later that I was sent that card by Ron, thank you.)

As I walked around I didn't see many Cano autographs there, but there were plenty of Jeter's, A-Rod, Pujols, and a tremendous amount of Bowman DPP auto's which don't interest me in the slightest. I did see a LaPorta Sterling Auto for $25 but I can not start that project even if he's hot.

I found my one of my other favorite vendors and eBay guys (rookiesandstars) and I had him cracking up with my stories of Sooz being asked if she needed WNBA cards, and having someone explain to me that "shiny" cards are more money. I picked up a bunch of Pujols base cards, and 2 inserts that I needed.

How could I have left without that lil Jeter? Too much. The Hughes and Russ are for the PC, and the 2009 POH Pujols is the one I already have but can't read my checklist properly.

The problem with getting there as early as I had was that many vendors were not set up completely when they opened the doors but thanks to my trusty 50 page Pujols list it took me a while to thumb through it at each place to check to make sure I didn't buy something I had (which I did anyway, because I do it once a show). Good thing I had my list to kill some time because I was finally able to find someone with a Cano auto I don't have and was willing to trade it for one that I had 2 of. Granted the one I got back in return is probably my least favorite autograph ever and aesthetically the worst trade ever, but six in one half a dozen in the other. (Beam Team for this)

Now I was done. My back was barking, I was hungry, and getting cranky like a child so it was time to leave. Oh well, not just yet... I stopped at one more table before leaving and ended up finding 2 cards I needed in a bargain box. Sweet.

Then I left.

New York area card show this weekend

Just in case anyone needs an excuse to leave work now, or call out sick tomorrow there is a card show going on at the Westchester County Center in White Plains, NY.

Hours are today 5pm-9pm, Friday 11am-8pm, Saturday and Sunday 10am-4pm.

I will probably go at some point tomorrow, all my checklists are printed out and ready to go. I'm hoping to pick up some supplies, the rest of the OPC set, and perhaps a few Pujols base cards for cheap to fill in some of the gaps in my collection.

Think anyone would be willing to trade Tulo's auto for a Cano? I'm thinking about bringing some of my Tulo's with me as trade material.

EDIT: I also got an e-mail from someone with news of a card show in the Delaware area if anyone is interested here is the info from the e-mail:

Mission Accomplished at the Card Show

The evening started with me driving over to pick up Sooz at her parents house which is a short way from the Convention Center at around 5pm. It was about 15 degrees at this point by the way. We paid $4 for parking my salt-mobile, $7 each for admission, and we were on our way to being broke within seconds of getting our admission tickets. Before you read of what I got tonight, I wanted to pat myself on the back for sticking to my game plan of going for all Pujols and 2001-2004. I did end up buying mostly those years with 1 or 2 later ones I needed. I also didn't end up buying a ton of Yankees which I tend to do.

I made it about 8 feet into the show floor before spending $4 bucks on a Pujols 2005 Ultimate Collection card #'ed 030/475. The lady who I purchased this card from was wearing a necklace with the number 33 in all diamonds, interesting thing I noticed.

My next stop was to TNT Cards booth, I know him from eBay (sad, I know). There I was able to pick up a 2005 Topps Bazooka Robinson Cano and a 2006 Topps Turkey Red White Robinson Cano, both for a buck. They didn't have change at the time and told me I could have the cards, and if I remembered to bring the 2 bucks later great, if not I could keep them anyway.

Moving right along I picked up a 2006 Bowman Chrome Pujols for a buck, got my change and returned to the previous vendor to pay them back.

Next on the money sucking trip was me and Sooz not finding each other for a while since we tend to like to search for different things, and end up always talking to different people as we go. I was searching a box that was marked "all cards half-off", meaning they were overpriced and trying to look like a great deal. This same guy has the same sale going on for about 2 years now. Sooz calls me and tells me there is a guy with a box of Yankees and Pujols cards for a buck a card. I put everything back and went to where she was. I picked out a bunch of cards, checked them against my checklist that I had with me and walked away from there with 22 new Pujols cards and 1 Jeter that I liked.

I know, I have issues but I'm not even done yet.

Onto the (cringe) Beckett booth to submit my 2 Pujols rookie cards. I chose 45 day turn around because I am cheap at $9 per card. $13 for shipping, $7 for insurance for a grand total of $38. Great. In my defense, ask Sooz what she thought of my cards... They are in really good condition, probably 9's or better.

Then I find another eBay seller I have talked to at shows before and have bought stuff from many times, Rookies & Stars. There I discovered a box of Yankees, as well as star cards like Pujols. We chatted for a bit, then I called Sooz to come over because it was a Jeter jackpot from what I saw. I ended up finding 6 Pujols cards, including one ROOKIE, a 2001 Fleer McGwire/Pujols card. I also picked up 4 Jeters, 1 A-Rod and 1 Phil Hughes card I didn't have. These cards were 6 for $5 bucks, which was nice, I just wish he had more Pujols cards. We talked for a great deal of time about eBay, having a store on there, and his physical store. He told us quite a bit of interesting info about how his store has been doing as well as answering my questions about prices to have a table and booth at the show.

My final stop, yes it's over here, was to the supply table I like. There is a couple who gets a booth at every show and sells supplies at a very reasonable price. I made some small talk here on 2 separate trips today, they are super friendly and Yankee fans. We purchased 5 packs of penny sleeves for $2, and a pack of super thick toploaders for $3, and I got a two row box for myself. I probably should have picked up a binder, but it can wait.

Sooz can tell you all about her adventure since hers might have a bit of different information.

I scanned a couple of cards to show a few of my favorites. I particularly like the Fleer Ultra Pujols because when he played the OF there weren't many, if any others of him fielding his position and this was a great shot. Him catching a fly ball at Wrigley Field.

P.S. Not one vendor that was selling recent singles had Pujols UD X XPonential 2 to finish those off.

-------------------------------------------------------
Sooz's Story

I didn't want to make an entirely seperate post about the items, I got so I am just putting it in the bottom of Marie's post.

I'm also don't have an as much detailed account as Marie's. The main part to know is that I got 52 cards (49 Jeter) for $50 in the end. I'm thrilled.

There was only vendor that I paid more than $1 for a Jeter card, and to him I paid $2. I got a Jeter short-print also for $2.

That's it. That's my story.

Autos and game-used cards are far too much money at these shows, so I stuck to singles.

January 16, 2009

Today's the day

Marie and I are headed to the White Plains card show today in sub-freezing temperature. The high in White Plains will be 16-degrees and it will feel around 2 or so degrees.

My mom said to me last night, "You're still going to the card show?"
I said, "Why not?"
Mom: "It's going to be cold."
Me: "The show is inside. Why wouldn't I drive up in a warm car and then walk inside a building full of baseball cards?"
Mom: What do you want for dinner?

I own a hat, scarf, gloves and jacket, in case anyone was wondering.

But I'm sure I'm going to find some cards to warm me up. Worse case scenario, I buy some .10 cent cards and burn them in the parking lot for heat.
It should turn into a fun day. We are going to hit the diner across the street and then, hopefully, go to the movie to see My Bloody Valentine. I actually hate horror films. I don't scare, I'm just not a fan. But my favorite eye candy is in this movie (not Jamie King) and I need to see this.
If all goes to plan my day should be: friends, food, baseball cards and eye candy. Sounds perfect even if it is freezing outside.

First card show of the year

Marie and I are preparing for the While Plains card show this weekend. In the New York area, it's one of the biggest card shows around, which happens every couple of months.

It lasts all weekend, but we are going on Friday, the first day of the event. I'm lucky to get out at all this weekend because work is busy and Saturday is my boyfriend's 30th birthday. I actually don't think he cares that I am going to a card show.

Getting Yankee cards is kind of difficult at this card show because they are always priced high. It really doesn't matter what Yankee you are looking for because everyone that goes to these shows is a Yankee fan. So, there is a big demand for Yankees, including Derek Jeter. I normally don't come back from these shows with Jeter cards because the price is just too much.

I find other guys I enjoy collecting or maybe some things I can throw in our eBay store and make a profit on.

The last card show I went to, I bought about 30 cards to throw in the store. At one of these cards shows one guy was trying to hawk WNBA cards to us. Seeing few women in the place, he must have thought we would be interested in such items.

No.

But card shows are fun. I hope Friday will be a good one for us.
