Did you know that BC Sports is open for business?
In April, Marie reported that BC Sports filed for bankruptcy and would close its stores, which are based on the East Coast.
At the time, we were pretty upset to learn the news. Marie worked at one store and I frequently shopped in another. Despite the higher prices, we still bought cards because of its reward program where you earned a point for every $1 you spent. Every time you accumulated $250, you got a $25 gift certificate good toward memorabilia at the end of the year.
Maybe the math isn't there, but we liked it.
Turns out, BC Sports has reopened some of its stores based in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Delaware.
They have been open since August, which I find unbelievable for a number of reasons.
1. As a frequent who was part of their reward program, I was never contacted about the stores re-opening. One would think that they would want to reach their customer base to prevent what happened earlier this year.
No email. No silly post card in the mail. I haven't even heard anything on sports radio and I listen to the local station nearly every day.
2 (which is also bigger than 1). BC Sports still has not paid its employees (at least the ones that worked in NY) from when they were laid off in April. Marie and other former BC Sports employees are still waiting for their last paycheck to clear.
Those who received direct deposit, never got it. And one of Marie's friends attempted to cash a check and it bounced.
However, if that wasn't bad enough and since I'm a sucker for punishment, I went into BC Sports on Monday to see what was going on.
I checked the shelves, they definitely have product. A lot of the hockey trading cards are on sale. Some baseball is on sale, but they are still overpriced. However, I don't see Topps 206 or Unique, the newest products on the market.
I ask the man working behind the counter if they have any Topps Unique.
He proceeds to look through the shelves, checking every sport because he has no idea what Topps Unique is. He finally tells me no. I said, you don't have 206 either. Those are the newest products.
He does the dumb stare at the wall again and finally tells me no.
Me: What's the newest baseball you have?
Him: We have Updates and Highlights.
Me: I don't really like that one.
Him: We have Bowman (as he shrugs).
Me: Ah. Thanks for looking.
It was a simple conversation, but I was annoyed leaving because the person working the store didn't know anything about cards. The former employees (and I don't know if they are still there) knew about cards. We could have long conversations about breaking boxes and they were fun to talk to.
However, on Monday the guy behind the counter was only interested in talking to some girls walking by the store rather than helping me.
Great times. I guess I'm sticking to eBay and the rest of the Internet for my cards.

It took long enough
Sorry for the lack of entertainment the last day or so, which is half the reason for the title. The other half of the reason is that I saw this picture on one of my friend's Facebook pages (we used to work together).

That is what is left of BC Sports in my local mall. I walked by there the other day and it was still filled with what was in the store on an everyday basis. I am still wondering where everything is going and where it will be liquidated, unless a company bought all of their assets.
Speaking of stores, I went to 2 Target's yesterday and neither one had any retail packs of Goudey or Piece of History. I have yet to see Piece of History in Target yet, not that I need to be buying it but I would like the option. I still want to go back to that K-Mart to see what is left and maybe if they got some new retail packs.
Has anyone seen new retail packs in their Targets? I feel like they are a little slow this year on getting in new items. I know that it takes a little longer for the retail version to sometimes hit stores, but it's horrible this year. I think the fact that there are really no local hobby stores makes it that much worse.
I think the White Plains show is this coming weekend, which could be a great thing or a bad thing depending on how you look at it. Great because there is no where to buy things around here, and bad because there is no extra money to go play with there. I wonder if this show will be bigger than the last one we hit. The last time we had gone the show was down to about half the normal size, and it is probably because of the economy and not the lack of people that are floating around (although there seemed to be less people as well).
I'll be here waiting for the Yankees to lose (maybe win), and watching the season finale of The Biggest Loser because I love that show.

Collecting cards never got so difficult
Marie had posted about BC Sports filing for bankruptcy not too long ago. She had the inside scoop because she found out she was let go from her job. It, obviously, sucked losing her job, but it still effects us even weeks later.
As we drove to Boston, we wondered out loud how we were going to find baseball cards. There's eBay and Target (the usual suspects), but BC Sports was the only real solution for a hobby shop for the both of us.
We get retail packs from Target and Wal-Mart, but who doesn't like getting hobby packs where the odds of getting a "hit" are greater. The other advantage to hobby packs is that often there are more cards in the pack than the retail packs.
We spent $3 on one retail pack of Piece of History. There were just five cards in each pack. I really feel cheated when I buy a $3 pack of cards and there is less than eight cards in the pack. Eight is the absolute minimum that I want to go.
The packs with four cards (Bowman Chrome) are terrible. But for a small price bump (usually just a $1 or $2), you can get a hobby pack that has more cards, sometimes even double the amount you would buy in a retail pack.
The closing of BC Sports leaves the both of us with just one hobby shop each. Strangely, both of those hobby shops -- remember, we live in different states -- are insanely overpriced. Even more so than BC. We're talking $7 for a pack of Upper Deck or $4.29 for a pack of Topps. I don't even walk into that store anymore because I feel like I am shopping for baseball cards at a stadium where cards are always overpriced (except for Fenway).
It's without a doubt disappointing and makes it harder to find baseball cards.

Local Sports Chain Closes

As of 4/6/09, BC Sports has filed Chapter 7 bankruptcy and is no longer in existence. This means that any and all points under the card club are gone, along with my part-time employment. I should know a little bit more about this tomorrow once I talk to the store manager, and will relay some more information.
BC Sports was a sports memorabilia and collectibles chain in the Northeast region of the country that had headquarters in West Chester, P.A. I'm fairly certain if you have any issues you can probably still get a number for the headquarters from information.

The Best Way to Get Paid Back
As you know from Sooz's blog about her Mariano signed picture, when you spend money at BC Sports stores you earn credit towards a memorabilia purchase later on. Every $250 spent on cards/wax gets your $25 back. I racked up $150 in credit (though there was $175, it did not post in time), and spent it in the best way possible. Without any more suspense I give you.... an Albert Pujols signed picture.

The original price of this glorious item was $299.99, however the store was running a sale where all memorabilia was 30% off. Which brought it down to $210, and with my $150 credit, it only cost me about $78 bucks with tax. It is a 16" x 20" framed picture signed by Albert. Obviously since I live in New York the items in the store are mostly Yankees, and a couple of Mets. I already have the few Yankees autos that I would want (which I will show off sometime), and honestly even if I didn't I would have bought a Pujols something or other since I will probably never afford that at full price with a clear conscience.
I have to admit, I would argue with anyone about him being one of the best (as good as A-Rod) with the stats he puts up year in and year out. Pujols has a career BA of .334, .425 OBP, .624 SLG, and on average only 55 SO's per season (except his rookie year). You don't ever see an A-Rod rookie card sell for this much, sadly A-Rod sells for about half that amount. How sick is that?
I haven't hung this up yet because I have no clue where I want it. I have a tremendous amount of baseball cards things and clutter all over the place that need to get moved so I can place this somewhere I can stare at it.

Can I Open Just One Pack?
I went to work a little bit early today to make sure I could purchase 2 things. One was the prize for the trivia, and the other was a Christmas gift from my unsuspecting uncle.
My uncle gave me a $50 bill and told me I had to buy something that came in a box and could be wrapped with a bow, meaning I couldn't use it to go out or drink 20 cups of coffee at Starbucks. He probably won't be surprised or happy about what I picked, but it's my gift. I grabbed a hobby box of 2008 UD Timeline (despite me wanting to kick their customer service team in the teeth), and am hopeful I got something decent under those wrappers.
While grabbing Steve's prize, I thought why not grab some snow day fun and get a few for myself. (Idiot.) I am trying very hard not to open one, but I am pretty sure I won't make it to the end of this blog without cracking it.
Is anyone else's family sick of buying them baseball cards for Christmas or is it just mine?
Ohhh--- Sneak preview, starting the 19th (today), all retired players autos in BC Sports are 40% off, and NFL Authentic jersey are 50% off as well as all holiday merchandise.
Oooouuchhhhh.... stop twisting my arm to open one pack, I'm goin, I'm goin.
OK, I got a Yankee Stadium Legacy card, and the rest of the pack was air. The gold card was Miguel Cabrera. No Yankees, no Pujols = AIR.
I wish I could get excited about cards in this set, but I just really don't care. They are decent looking cards, but I just want to get rid of most of them. I have lots of Cubbies if anyone collects them out there.

Sale on Cards at BC Sports and Trivia Contest
Just to let anyone who lives near a BC Sports store know that the whole store is on sale. All cards are 20% off, Jerseys 20% off, signed stuff is 20% off also.
The other stuff is a greater discount for the most part, like holiday stuff, mugs, glasses, etc.
I plan on buying something useless at some point.
Speaking of useless, here is a trivia question that I like to get people with:
Where was Pee Wee Herman's bike supposed to be when they stole it in the movie?
First correct answer gets a free 2008 pack of UD Documentary.
(Offer excludes Sooz who thought she could win.)

Hobby vs. Retail
I've noticed a trend in some of the blogs we visit are comparing hobby vs. retail and I felt the need to add my 2 cents. I work part-time in a store that sells hobby only packs of everything, and coincidentally is about 50 yards from Target and retail. I am not going to say how many days (all) that I have left the mall with one or the other, or both.
Right now the store I work in is selling UD Timeline packs for $4.29 up from $3.99 a week ago, and is also selling UD Masterpiece Baseball for $6.99... Masterpieces for $6.99! I did make an attempt to purchase 2 packs from fresh boxes and see what happens. I ended up with 2 YSL cards, and crap. We have like 7 of every card from this set, and I have two blasters which makes me an idiot for buying two hobby packs for that price. In Target you can get UD Timeline for $1.99 a pack (way more fun), and they haven't had the Masterpieces in a while. We also just got in the Ballpark Collection at $49.99 per pack (3 GU and 1 AU per pack on average). Needless to say, I will not be purchasing any of those.
My other issue with this debate is the problem with the pricing of retail blasters. They are marked from the card companies at $19.99, however Modells and Sports Authority like to charge $24.99 for them. They can go scratch unless I am getting a sale price. The same stores also charge a dollar or two more for rack packs as well.
2008 Stadium Club... we could go on and on about what was Topps thinking releasing yet another product with a price tag not conducive to what most collectors can afford in this economy, or are willing to spend with the economy in a downward progression. Anyway, point is I got a blaster and a ton of base cards and 1st day Issues AND ONE SP AUTO for $19.99. One pack of hobby is $24.99 vs. one pack of retail for $2.99 if you are just trying to get your favorite players or set build. Topps can get bent for that pack.
I buy both hobby and retail, and often in one trip. It depends on my mood and what I feel like opening at the time. I honestly feel like if you are just trying to build sets or pull players, there is just as good of a chance at that in the cheaper retail versions of the packs. However, if you collect Albert Pujols or Derek Jeter you more or less have no chance at getting them in either pack. (I still do not have all the UD Timeline, or the Stadium Club cards)
We will be going out on Sunday together, which means we will end up on some wild goose chase for baseball cards and have something interesting to report, I hope. Until then, you may have to cross your fingers that I open one of my bargain blasters from K-Mart (that is the 2 for 1 08 Masterpieces). I am working all day tomorrow so God knows I will have purchased something dumb by this time tomorrow.
I'm done for now.
Stay tuned.

Black Friday & Blasters
The alarm went off at 2:50am, I hit the snooze button twice then got out of my warm bed to head for the mall. I had only been asleep for about 2 hours so you can call that a nap. I was in the mall parking lot by 3:20am with my first cup of coffee, waiting for my friend to meet me. Some stores were open when we got there (why I have no idea), but we were there for our free annual JC Penney snow globe of which I haven't even opened yet. They opened at 4am, and thus kicked off the Black Friday debacle for us.
Our schedule was done by the hour according to which stores opened at what times. JCP at 4, Modells/Old Navy at 5, Target at 6, Gamestop at 7. Target had a line from one side of the mall halfway to the other outside, and when they opened the doors the line was no more. So I ran. I ran like the wind to the back of the store to get my brother a video game. I made it there in like a minute, literally and asked for the game and it was SOLD OUT. REALLY?! That sucked. But I got all my DVD sales.
OK, enough girly shop talk. Now onto Modells....
Modells had coupons for 33% off any licensed sports apparel for one item and 33% off any licensed novelty item. I found a Stadium Club blaster (!), although $25 I figured I was taking a chance on a Pujols auto and rewarding my valiant early bird efforts. Well, the manager did the same. He gave me the 33% off the blaster, and I only ended up paying like $16. Hooray! I also picked up 2 blister packs of SP Authentic in Modells.
Then to BC Sports... I grabbed 2 packs of Timeline's thanks to my brothers debit card. I run an errand or two for him, and he rewards his older sister with cardboard. Awesome.
12 noon: Target #2 -- Another blaster of Stadium Club was found, as well as many blasters of Timeline, which by the way are only $14.99 if you can find them in Target. Well, long story short, the Stadium Club box didn't scan, and I ended up with that one for $14.99. Yay for me, not for mom who gets to pay and put those into my stocking which now will hold nothing else, and thats fine by me.
I spent a good 9 hours shopping on 2 hours of sleep, got a bunch of presents on a small budget and did pretty ok. I didn't spend much (of my own money) on myself, I helped my mom get some things on sale so she didn't have to spend extra money, too. I'm not usually a shopper for things other than baseball cards and coffee, but Black Friday is the best. And when you get sales on baseball cards, it makes getting out of bed at 3am worth it.
Stay tuned for pack breaks... I need to refuel and perhaps wash the nap off my face before playing.

2008 Upper Deck SP Authentic Baseball

Despite having no business purchasing anything right now, I felt like eBay needed a little spice in the category department so I picked up a couple of packs of the new SP Authentic. The box in BC was sealed and opened right in front of me so I figured I had a better shot now at getting something good. 24 packs per box, 5 cards per pack and 3 rows of 8 in the box. I picked the 4th pack from the top of each row yesterday, no auto's or game used cards, but I got 2 Yankee Stadium Legacy cards, 3 Marquee Matchups, and.... a Pujols base card. The cards themselves are not very appealing looking, they are quite boring actually. The Marquee Matchups are pretty cool, but they are the replacement to last years Authentic Speed/Power inserts. The pictures on the MM's are nice head shots with a short story on the back.
Today's trip to the store yielded the same results, 2 Yankee Stadium Legacy and 3 MM. I took the 3 bottom packs today, and the only packs missing were the 3 I got the day before. I'm sorry I didn't go second from the bottom because that was my first instinct.
Everything except the Yankee Stadium Legacy, Pujols, and Russ Martin are in the eBay store.
We still have the case of 2008 UD Piece of History to break, which I am hoping we get to soon to recoup some of the cash we spent. I'll keep you posted on that.
In the meantime, click on the link to the store, check out the new items and if you click through to the store and make a purchase be sure to tell us to get your free gift.

2008 Topps Series 2 Box Break
About a week ago I was wandering through the mall, wondering what I should waste some money on. I walked into BC Sports, and found out that a Topps Series 2 hobby box would only cost me $58 bucks. Bargain! And by bargain, I mean the only box that was in the $50 range I was willing to spend that day.
I will give Topps a little credit on the Series 2 because they included a mystery redemption card in the hobby boxes, as well as a game used card. I was so furious with getting a boxload of crap in Series 1, I'm not sure why I decided to buy this box but then again I hate money.
I got a Jose Reyes 2007 Season Highlights Game Used Jersey card, Red Hot Rookie Redemption #14, 2 Mickey Mantle cards, about 8 Gold cards, and quite a number of gold foil. I also got the usual inserts that are not very exciting, like the presidential ones, Topps Stars, and a couple of Trading Card History.
Overall, for $58 bucks you really can't go wrong with Series 2.
