I won't stop collecting Alex Rodiguez cards any time soon
April 12, 2011
I bought some vintage
I was at the card shop yesterday and SOMEONE who will remain nameless (since I know he will read this) dangled two cards in front of me and I had to have them. So I kinda stole them. Well borrowed, they are on my tab. For the record, I think a tab at a card shop is far better than a tab at a bar. Just sayin'.
So here are the two cards I stole/borrowed:
Both are from a ten card Prospects subset in 1995 Fleer.
Baby Derek Jeter

Baby Alex Rodriguez

I can never resist a card of a player I like from when they were just coming up. The baby faces will get me every time. Maybe that's part of the girly side of my collection, picking up cards when the players looked like adorable little kids. Either way, it doesn't hurt my collection by adding two future Hall of Famers (I still think A-Rod has a chance).
I actually completed a trade for a bunch of Derek Jeter cards that I have been meaning to get around to scanning. They are amazing. Perhaps that will be my showcase this weekend.
Anyone pick up any new cards at their local card shop this week?

More manufactured "relic" cards - Good idea or gimmick?
We've seen manufactured patch cards
In 2010 Updates and Highlights
We talk about gimmicks plenty around here and on other blogs.
But how do you really feel about these cards?
There are plenty collectors who don't seem to have a problem with these cards.
Take this Albert Pujols pink 1/1 bat barrel
It sold for $326.79.
A Mikcey Mantle pink 1/1 bat barrel
While manufactured, it's certainly something different. And Topps is not pretending for this card to be anything else. The card is clearly labeled on the front and back that it is a manufactured bat barrel.
Personally, I think the cards are sharp. I don't really have a problem with them. It's a new way to create cards where Topps doesn't have to spend a lot of money and getting autograph fees or buying jerseys and pants.
Some people on eBay would agree with me - this Derek Jeter black bat /25
But what about you guys?

Topps Series 2 singles hitting the Bay
Anyway, Marie sent me a link to a Robinson Cano Topps Series 2 auto. I was surprised to actually see the cards on eBay THIS early. I don't think the set is actually set to come out until Thursday (maybe Wednesday).
You only need to click on one of each auction style because they scanned all the cards into the same picture.
Relic cards: Alfonso Soriano
Hat logo cards: Larry Doby
Dual relic card: Albert Pujols and Ryan Howard
Autos: Robinson Cano
Jumbo patch: Matt Cain
Jumbo jersey: Chipper Jones

What a game!

All I have to say is, WOW! Sooz and myself, along with my brother and his friend had seats 15 rows behind homeplate last night for Game 2 of the ALDS, Yankees v. Twins. The seats were insane, most of the people were either bored or had no idea what was going on next to us, but we had fun and the Yankees came out victorious.

And if we needed a 3rd reason, Donald Trump was about 8 rows in front of us in the moat seats. You can't miss that rug on his head.

The game was great. A-Rod showed up and proved he can play in the post-season, and I guess it's better late than never. It also could be because he missed a month and maybe thinks it's still September (just ask Flash). A-Rod tied the game with a blast, which I don't have a picture of because I was too busy going bananas (B A N A N A S). Then Teixeira came up in the bottom of the 11th and smashed a line drive that hit the top of the wall for a game winning homerun. I am not going to get into the umpires sucking because I don't care anymore.
Ronan Tynan singing God Bless America.
I took some pictures and I figured some of you guys might like to see a different view. We stayed long enough to see the pie and I got a few pics of that, too. The whole stadium stayed for the pie and most of the people were singing 'New York, New York' very loudly. The first picture was blurry because AJ was running out and I was screaming and couldn't stay still.

The view from the platform of the 4 train, right in between the old (left) and new stadium (right).

Looking forward to Sunday's game and the Yankees crushing Pavano. Until then, I will enjoy watching the Dodgers and Cardinals. (Go Dodgers, and go Albert!)

O-Pee-Chee Problem

Who would have thought I would end up with an SP of Pujols from this set before I got the base card? (You get a $2 off coupon for an OPC blaster in each retail pack purchased in Target.)
Now it wouldn't be a problem if I didn't have a ton of other highlights to showcase. So here you have it:

Yes, I did end up with 2 Ryan Doumit black parallels, and they were both in the same blaster. I also got my first hobby box of the year in the mail today and plan to break that bad boy tomorrow once I am done with this class. I love vintage type stuff, so I really don't care about the ripped off design or anything like that. Everything that has come out in recent years is a rip off of something from years ago (meaning retro type sets).
I plan on logging in all my cards this weekend this way I can see how many out of the 660 I have so far. The guys I collect will be living in their binders, and luckily I got some doubles of those guys so I can leave one in the set. When I used to build sets I used to make sure I had two of all Pujols, and some others this way I could have one in my PC and one in the set. Not sure I see that happening here since I have yet to get a Pujols or Jeter base.
On another note, I also want to let the people that I owe cards to know that I will also be doing a mass mailing probably Friday. I apologize for the delay but I haven't really had much time. If you have sent me something, I am sorry for the delayed thanks but I haven't been to my P.O. Box in quite a few days.
If anyone is skipping town early tomorrow for the holiday weekend, have a happy and safe 4th of July weekend!
