I need a bit of a favor...

I guess this is directed towards the good people of St. Louis, and the good people attending this years All-Star Game Fanfest. I was wondering if someone out there would want to pick me up a Pujols Fanfest card, and/or whatever cheap (under $5 card) that is exclusive to the All-Star game.

At the Fanfest here last summer in order to get some of the cards you had to turn in a wrapper or two to be able to pick an exclusive card. I'd be willing to buy 2 of the cheapest packs (last year they had Opening Day and First Edition, in order to get the Pujols and you can keep the cards from the packs. However, that may not be the case this year but it could be how they do it from year to year. Or, if you want to trade for something for the card/cards that is cool, too.

If anyone is going and would like to e-mail me and help me out that would be awesome.

Just add this to the rest of my knucklehead ideas.

Heartbreaking set of Yankees

The other day I had mentioned that I got a whole bunch of mail from various bloggers. I wanted to share some of them with you starting with a package from Matt at Heartbreaking Cards of Staggering Genius who sent me one of the coolest things I have seen in a long time. Matt sent me a complete 50 card set of Yankees called, "50 Years of Yankee All Stars". The set includes Yankee greats from 1933-1983, and are oversized cards printed in 1983. I absolutely love this set of cards, and the reason I took pictures of some of the cards was because in the scanner the white falls into the background of the scanner and you only see within the portrait border.

The set has many Yankee greats and I decided to take pictures of the more easily identifiable Yankees. Most people wouldn't know Eddie Lopat or Allie Reynolds if they saw a portrait of them so I took pictures of Mantle, Gehrig, DiMaggio, Berra, and Ruth. This is a set that I have never seen before which made it a VERY pleasant and awesome surprise. Matt is a great guy to trade with, and is a very genuine person. I am going to work on putting something nice together for him since I owed him for a previous mailday as well. If you are unfamiliar with his blog you MUST go check it out, and perhaps help him out with completing something he is working on.

I would also like to let everyone know that the post office was closed at noon on Friday so I missed mailing out all packages but will mail them on Monday.

O-Pee-Chee Target Coupon

Just a little info to pass along that might prove helpful to everyone. I had some Target coupons for $2 off an O-Pee-Chee blaster here (you get them in EVERY retail pack at Target), so I brought them with me to Target today when I went to the mall. I knew that they had a boatload of blasters last night and was merely going back to see if the one I hid was still there. Yes, I am crazy enough to think they would all be sold by today.

Anyway, it was there and I had my coupons. When I handed her all of them I went to take some back because I realized I couldn't use them all, but she was in a rush and already scanned more than one so I shut my pie-hole promptly and just went with it. I handed them to the cashier who never read them and just scanned ALL of them. They say limit one per item or transaction, however the first one scanned as an MLB -$2 coupon right under the blaster, the others at the bottom as Target coupons.

So if you have a couple of those coupons and don't see yourself buying 5 more blasters or whatever, give handing an unsuspecting cashier a handful a try. You never know.

I'm all about saving money, and it's not my job to read and/or accept those. My hope is another $2.99 blaster comes around this year like last years Stadium Club. What a joy that was discovering.

Steve McNair Dead

Several media outlets are reporting that former Tennessee Titans QB Steve McNair was killed.

This has been the most up-to-date site based on the info, but there isn't much yet.
Here's another site.

An O-Pee-Chee Auto - Kouz style

Apparently, the odds of getting an O-Pee-Chee autograph aren't that great. But that never stopped me from getting the card I want.

I picked up this Kevin Kouzmanoff OPC auto for $1 (I think $4 shipped) and it actually is one of my favorite autos of his.

The card isn't too flashy and it's plain without being boring. The yellow border gives it just a little style and you can tell it's different than the base cards because it's glossy. The colors are actually so ugly that I like it.

Maybe I'm looking a little too much into the card, but it's one of my new favorite Kouz cards.

Holy Smokes!

I got so much mail today!!! I guess not having time to get to the post office to pick it up every day has its perks. My mailbox was stuffed to the gills, plus a yellow card indicating more mail. I got packages from all over the place including Heartbreaking Cards (wait til I scan what he sent, I was in heaven), White Sox Cards (a random generous mailer), All Tribe Baseball (World's Greatest Dad, I mean BaseballDad), Night Owl Cards (just felt like sending me stuff- awesome!), Grand Cards (insisted on sending me something in return), @REALjtCarter (my twitter buddy, who I am currently searching for more cards to send him), Dinged Corners (all cards were mint and awesome as always), Jim (who e-mailed me about a mini Goudey Pujols, not sure if he has a blogger name), and someone from NY sent me a Jeter 92 Classic card and a rainbow Bowman Heritage Adam Lind (thanks a million, whoever you are, lol. Please e-mail me and identify yourself, and call me an idiot for forgetting who you are.) I almost forgot Beardy!!! Beardy sent me a BOATLOAD of YSL cards since he is a Yankee Hater and an O's fan. I don't mind, because now we can get rid of the enemy cards to each other. Thanks Beardy!!

I would link all of you but I am incredibly lazy. I suggest that everyone reading this blog take a look at the sidebar and by all means stop by each and every one of the blogs mentioned here and give them a read, sign up to follow them, and enjoy all our bickering and bantering.

The generosity of the people in this close knit group of collectors is something second to none. I can't say enough how grateful I am to have met all of you, and for your genorosity. We should all feel that way. With the way the world is now it is nice to know that some people actual think about others without expecting anything in return (though getting stuff back is the fun part, =) )

My job this weekend is to show off some of this awesome mail, update all of my PC, and pack up cards to mail to everyone I owe stuff to. I have piles of cards on my desk that need to be logged in and I just haven't had the time. I have a hobby box of O-Pee-Chee that is begging to be opened, and a little something else for funsies.

I finished my first Biology class today, and cross your fingers for me that I got a good grade. I studied my ass off, so I better. Monday starts the second and final Biology class I need to take, and lasts another 5 weeks. After that I am done until September, and it will be a welcome end. I am not sure why I didn't think cramming 16 weeks of work in 5 weeks, in a subject that doesn't come very easy would be an easy or somewhat easy task. I'm done babbling about that now.

Anywho, stay tuned to see some fun stuff this weekend. Not sure if anyone will even be home reading this over the weekend so maybe I will save some for posting during the week to give you all something to do at work, other than work.

Off the beaten path

I was down in Maryland for the day, covering a soccer match for my newspaper, The Press of Atlantic City. Our own Ocean City Barons (an amateur team in the USL) was playing against D.C. United. These types of matches don't happen every day, so it was a pretty big deal to the people down in the area and for the players.

The players are made up of mostly college-aged athletes with a couple of older guys and even one high school senior. They ended up losing 2-0, but they played well. D.C. United didn't score until the 75th minute on a penalty kick. The second goal was given up very late in the 93rd minute.

While I was at the game, I decided to pick up a $2 pack of MLS cards. You can 10 cards per pack and with a chance at a jersey card. Jersey cards fall three per box, according to the advertising on the box.

Here's what I got:

Eddie Robinson

Chris Wingert

Darren Huckerby

Mike Magee

Logan Pause

Taylor Twellman

Frankie Hejduk

Zach Wells

Preston Burpo

Kevin Alston -Super Draft

O-Pee-Chee Problem

By problem, I mean I can't stop buying them. It's an addiction, and the first step is admitting that you have a problem so here I am. My newest and "favoritest" cards came out of retail packs today from Target.

Who would have thought I would end up with an SP of Pujols from this set before I got the base card? (You get a $2 off coupon for an OPC blaster in each retail pack purchased in Target.)

Now it wouldn't be a problem if I didn't have a ton of other highlights to showcase. So here you have it:

Yes, I did end up with 2 Ryan Doumit black parallels, and they were both in the same blaster. I also got my first hobby box of the year in the mail today and plan to break that bad boy tomorrow once I am done with this class. I love vintage type stuff, so I really don't care about the ripped off design or anything like that. Everything that has come out in recent years is a rip off of something from years ago (meaning retro type sets).

I plan on logging in all my cards this weekend this way I can see how many out of the 660 I have so far. The guys I collect will be living in their binders, and luckily I got some doubles of those guys so I can leave one in the set. When I used to build sets I used to make sure I had two of all Pujols, and some others this way I could have one in my PC and one in the set. Not sure I see that happening here since I have yet to get a Pujols or Jeter base.

On another note, I also want to let the people that I owe cards to know that I will also be doing a mass mailing probably Friday. I apologize for the delay but I haven't really had much time. If you have sent me something, I am sorry for the delayed thanks but I haven't been to my P.O. Box in quite a few days.

If anyone is skipping town early tomorrow for the holiday weekend, have a happy and safe 4th of July weekend!

Swap your wife and your collection?!

Just received an unsolicited email, which several other bloggers out there have received as I look through the email list.

Apparently, the 'hit shot' Wife Swap is looking to swap wives from families that are collectors. Collectors of what? Well, it doesn't say.

Here's the email:

---------------------
Wife Swap is currently casting for our fifth season and we are looking for families who are collectors!

If you think you have the best collection around, then I want to hear from you!

The premise of Wife Swap is simple: for seven days, two wives from two different families with very different values exchange husbands, children and lives (but not bedrooms) to discover what it's like to live a different family's life.

It's an interesting social experiment and a great way to see your family in a whole new light. It is shot as a documentary series, so NO scripts and no set. It's just a small camera crew that is documenting your life.

Families that appear on the show will receive a generous financial honorarium and if you refer a family that appears on the show you would receive $1000.

Here at 'Wife Swap' we look for a two-parent home with at least one child between the ages of 7 and 17 living at home full time.

If you are interested, please email me your contact information and tell me a little about your family. Or if you would like to refer a family, please email me their contact information and I will be in touch.

-------------------------------------------------

If you want in, let me know because I want the $1,000 referral prize.

I have much more I want to say about this, but I will just keep it to myself for now as this thing is supposed to fun. Yippee!
